Eleanor Antin

* The artist’s work is on view in the “Made in California: Now” at LACMA West and “Revealing and Concealing: Portraits & Identity” at the Skirball Cultural Center. Antin lives in San Diego but is a frequent L.A. visitor.

Thai Food: In San Diego, the restaurants are the pits--there are two Thai places here that I like. The Thai House on Pico is wonderful-looking with a very ‘80s decor like an unfinished loft, and the Talesai in Studio City is fantastic and very inventive. Both have really wonderful food, but the waiters are much better at the Talesai.

Gallery Hopping: On Saturday mornings, I like to see an art show, or several. I might spend the afternoon at the galleries at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. I show at Craig Krull Gallery there. Or it’s nice to go to one of the museums, like LACMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art or the Getty. I go to whichever one has the best shows on view: Ideally, they’d have some really great show like Duchamp or Magritte or maybe a huge Rococo show.

Go Padres: There are two things I like to do Saturday nights: Most seasons, if the Dodgers are playing the Padres, I would like to go and see the Dodgers lose. Or there’s this incredibly beautiful theater I’ve been to, the John Anson Ford Amphitheater. It’s so gorgeous and so charming with the trees all around it.

Comida Por La Noche: La Serenata di Garibaldi in Boyle Heights is another great restaurant. It’s sort of an au cuisine Mexican place, with marvelous fish and great sauces. It’s really gorgeous and sort of a funky place, and it’s open late.

Viewing and Reading: One reason I like L.A. is the endless theaters for independent and foreign films, like the Nuart. I like the Sunset 5--it’s nice to get coffee downstairs, to sit and people-watch. L.A. also has lots of good, old, used bookstores where you can find great surprises. Several of my favorite bookstores are on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica.
