Royal 16, Agoura 6--The Highlanders apparently have not forgotten that Agoura broke their streak of 17 consecutive league titles two years ago.

The Highlanders routed the Chargers in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Community Park to clinch their 19th league title in 20 years.

Ramiro Saldain scored five goals for the Highlanders (23-3, 7-0 in league play), giving him 151 for the season. Saldain, a senior hole setter, needs three goals to break the school record set by Jack Kocur in 1991.

“My job is basically to set the offense, to draw some kick-outs, to pass, to get everyone involved and to score when I have the opportunity,” Saldain said. “They came out really hard and fast and we just had to match their intensity.”

Agoura (17-8, 5-2), ranked fifth in Division IV, scored first on Mike Thomas’ goal with 5:21 left in the first quarter.

Royal, ranked No. 1 in Division IV and second in The Times’ regional poll, took a 6-1 halftime lead, scoring three goals within a 90-second span of the second quarter. Hole guard Sean Carnahan, driver Justin McClure and Saldain scored on one-timers from point-blank range after pinpoint perimeter passing.

McClure scored three goals, and Carnahan, Chris Andelin and Greg Foote each added two for Royal, which outscored the Chargers, 7-3, in the fourth quarter. Highlanders goalie Tom Onyshko made 11 saves and foiled two breakaways.

Mike Monaco scored three goals for Agoura.
