A mother and daughter and their downstairs neighbor are homeless after a fire roared through an upstairs Fullerton apartment Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Firefighters were called at 2:13 p.m. to battle the blaze in the 1600 block of West Malvern Avenue, said Fullerton Fire Department Supervisor Danielle Craig. The flames were extinguished in 19 minutes.

The 38-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter were not at home when the blaze broke out, causing major damage to their apartment, said Barbara Jackson, spokeswoman for the Orange County chapter of the Red Cross.

The 43-year-old man who lived in the apartment below suffered major water damage to his home.

The Red Cross will provide all three with temporary lodging and vouchers for food for the weekend and vouchers for new clothing.

On Monday, the mother and daughter will meet with the Red Cross to receive help obtaining basic household items to furnish their next home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The damage has not yet been estimated.
