Skateboards on Campus

Share

* Re “Skateboarder With a Cause,” (Oct. 13):

I am not a skateboarder. I also don’t see why kids feel the need to ride them everywhere, but that is their choice. If a student wants to be able to ride his skateboard to school, then no one should be able to stop him. Many kids ride their bikes to school, yet they do not cause a disruption on campus.

The student, Andrew Gazdecki, is obviously serious about this, since he has taken it to the school board. The principal and other officials are using bad judgment by supporting his campaign but not even considering what he is proposing. They say it is a good lesson for him, but it is only teaching him that adults will never take teens seriously.

I say that they at least should give him a fair chance and let kids skateboard on campus. If students abuse that privilege, then they can simply take it away again.

* I am glad that the boy received enough signatures for his petition to allow him to bring the board onto his campus.

However, it is ridiculous that the principal will not allow skateboarding on campus. If other school districts enable students to skate on campus, we should have the same rights.

As some of the other schools have done, we could have ramps on campus, or more skate parks for the community. I wish the best of luck to Gazdecki.
