Southdown Column

* I am outraged at the column by Brian Mastin of Southdown Corp. in your Oct. 22 issue (“Schools, Homes, Roads Fuel Demand for Aggregate”). Here is a man who represents a company that has been extremely arrogant with the people of our community, treating us like little children.

His article did not [address] any of the atrocious results that will occur if the mine his company proposes is built. Unmentioned were the threats to the health of the people who live here. No mention was made of the threat to our water supply or the consequences of the truck traffic on California 14. The project is not suitable in an inhabited area.

Consider the groups that oppose the project:

* All political representatives of the people in the area.

* All school districts (the Jupiter Springs district will cancel a proposed elementary school if the project is approved).

* All business organizations.

* All environmental groups.

* The city of Santa Clarita (which has set aside $1 million to fight it).
