Prop. 37

Share

* More than 1 million voters acted to put Prop. 37 on the ballot to protect consumers, businesses and taxpayers from potentially billions of dollars in hidden taxes. The measure will prevent higher consumer costs on products and services Californians use every day, such as gasoline, food, utilities and communications.

In 1997, the California Supreme Court created a loophole in the law that gives state and local governments sweeping authority to levy higher taxes that affect consumers and businesses. These taxes can be imposed without a vote of the people or any accountability as to how the tax collections would be spent. Governments merely have to label the new taxes as “fees.”

Support of Prop. 37 will guarantee that California voters will have a voice in determining which tax proposals are necessary and which aren’t.
