Share

For the first time, the Software Council of Southern California will honor two chief executives at its annual Software Industry Awards. The CEO of the Year award will be shared by Lee Roberts of FileNet in Costa Mesa and Michael Bell of Encore Software in Carson. Roberts was selected for turning a $5.5-million loss in 1997 into a $19.7-million profit in 1999 for FileNet, a developer of document management software. Under Roberts, FileNet created products for handling Internet content and keeping track of supply chains online. FileNet’s sales increased from $251 million in 1997 to $347 million in 1999. Bell will be honored for building a successful software publishing company during a period of intense industry consolidation. When Encore Software was founded six years ago, it packaged and sold software written by other companies. In the last few years, the firm has started producing its own software as well. Sales increased from $9.8 million in 1997 to $22.5 million in 1999, with profit climbing from $1 million to $2.2 million in the same period. Roberts and Bell will receive their awards tonight at the Regal Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
