Joseph Bernacchia, a former history teacher and merchandiser, died Sunday in Ventura following a long illness. He was 51.

He was born April 25, 1949, in New Haven, Conn., to Leo and Julia Landino Bernacchia.

After graduating from Central Connecticut State University, Bernacchia taught history and later moved to Santa Barbara.

He moved to Ventura seven years ago and was a merchandiser in the food and beverage industry until he became ill.

He is survived by his daughter, Gina Bernacchia of Ventura; son Michael Bernacchia of Ojai; friend Marci Henault of La Conchita; and brother Louis Bernacchia of Branford, Conn.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday. Call 649-2724 for additional information.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to the Cedars Sinai Organ Donation Program, 8700 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048.

Arrangements are under the direction of Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.
