Driver Who Fled Police Killed When Car Hits Freeway Pillar
A driver who had been fleeing Santa Ana police died early Sunday when his car struck the pillar of a Costa Mesa Freeway overpass, authorities said.
Officers had tried to pull him over for reckless driving just before 1 a.m. Sunday, authorities said, but he refused to stop.
Officers chased the man south on Main Street in Santa Ana. They had lost sight of the man’s vehicle when they saw smoke billowing from beneath the overpass, then discovered that he had crashed.
The driver died at the scene, authorities said. He was not identified Sunday.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
