Spurrier Agrees to $8.4-Million Deal

Florida Coach Steve Spurrier has agreed to terms of a four-year contract extension worth $8.4 million, a deal that should keep him at his alma mater through 2006.

No deal had been signed, but the Associated Press and the Sporting News reported that the sides had reached agreement. Spurrier wasn’t immediately available for comment.

“We’re working on an extension,” athletic director Jeremy Foley said.

He is currently in the fourth year of a six-year deal worth an average of $2 million per year. When the new contract is signed, he’ll make $2.1 million per season from 2001-2006. About half the salary will be paid by Florida’s apparel deal with Nike, according to The Sporting News.

Auburn Coach Tommy Tuberville has a new five-year contract that will pay him $1.25 million annually, a raise of nearly $500,000. “Tommy has obviously done an exceptional job directing our football program both on and off the field,” Auburn Athletic Director David Housel said.

University of Kentucky defensive coordinator Mike Major resigned, effective at the end of the season, with the Wildcats on track to allow the most points in the Southeastern Conference for the second consecutive year. Kentucky has allowed 32.4 points a game this season.
