Dalmatian Decisions

Re “She’s Just Playing De Vil’s Advocate” (by Paul Lieberman, Nov. 12):

Were Glenn Close truly concerned about animals, she would have assumed the responsibility of speaking out against the unnecessary and cruel euthanasia of thousands of Dalmatians returned to local animal shelters after the release of Disney’s “101 Dalmatians” in 1996, a situation that I anticipate will repeat itself with “102 Dalmatians.”

We in the humane community are struggling to educate people on the need to make an intelligent and informed decision when it comes to choosing a pet. Since 1996, the popularity of “101 Dalmatians” and Disney’s unrelenting merchandising of “Dalmatians”-inspired products have caused too many people to rashly adopt Dalmatian puppies, only to relinquish them to the nation’s animal shelters.

Disney and Close should recognize their power to positively influence the decisions of pet owners and should act responsibly to prevent another flood of unnecessarily euthanized pets.
