Commander’s Palace Opens on the Strip

Commander’s Palace, the gourmet landmark in New Orleans’ Garden District, this month opened its first and only branch in (where else?) Las Vegas.

The location may be a scandal to the well-to-do Louisiana ladies who lunch: right on the Strip, in the Moroccan-themed Desert Passage complex that wraps around the new Aladdin Resort & Casino. But the food (such as the signature bananas Foster) and the interior (five rooms done in elegant dark wood) are authentic to the original, according to Kevin Downing, dining room manager at the Las Vegas branch.

“Of course, we toned down the spices and the salt a teeny bit,” he conceded, explaining that the humidity of New Orleans makes salt a necessity. And the prices in Las Vegas are “up just a tad” from the Big Easy, he added. Dinner entrees are about $21 to $39; lunch entrees are somewhat less.

A dining patio is planned for spring, but as yet there are no weekend jazz brunches, popular at the New Orleans original.

The Las Vegas branch is open for lunch and dinner daily except Christmas and Christmas Eve. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. Telephone (702) 892-8272.
