Taking a Shine to Young Shoppers

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A new bargain store has just opened in a location already known by San Fernando Valley residents for its discounted quality apparel--the Alley in the Valley.

With its neo-industrial decor and lighting, Shine! looks more like a nightclub than a store, and its hip, cool contents are sure to appeal to younger shoppers. They will discover the same labels found in boutiques and department stores but at prices 20% to 40% lower.

A full-length harlequin patchwork velvet by Mannequins, resplendent with silver crystal details, would sell elsewhere for $250, but at Shine! the price is $130. A killer maroon chiffon one-shouldered tiered tea-length gown by ABS sells at regular stores for $230, but the tag here is $115. The sizes range from 2 to 12.

Owner Michael Weintraub seems to have thought of everything, including shoes, handbags and other accessories, allowing shoppers to buy an entire outfit in one place. Black evening sandals by Dezario that usually sell for more than $100 are $52.50, and a gold evening bag with a beautiful buttterfly design by Angelica that retails for $65 sells here for $32.50.

Shine! The Alley in the Valley, 6000 Reseda Blvd., Tarzana. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (818) 708-2199.

Weekend Supersale: It’s hard to find a store that isn’t having a sale this weekend, but one we especially like is happening at Cotton USA, an outlet for a local manufacturer. The goods are all women’s first-quality cotton separates, including twill pants for $10, twill jackets for $20 and fully lined jackets for $15. Sale begins today and runs through Dec. 31.

Cotton USA Outlet, 22559 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. (818) 225-8725.
