Tickets Go on Sale for High-Speed Amtrak
Tickets for Amtrak’s highly touted but much-delayed Acela Express high-speed train between Washington and Boston are to go on sale Wednesday. Service is scheduled to begin Dec. 11, starting with one round trip per day.
Last year, Amtrak said it would begin Acela Express by the end of 1999; later it said it hoped to begin this summer. But citing technical difficulties, Amtrak repeatedly delayed the launch date. The Acela Express, using the electric propulsion system behind France’s high-speed trains, can go up to 150 mph, about 25 mph faster than the fastest Amtrak trains now travel.
Amtrak says the Washington-to-New York leg will take two hours, 44 minutes; New York to Boston will be three hours, 23 minutes. Stops will include Baltimore; Baltimore-Washington International Airport; Wilmington, Del.; Philadelphia; Trenton and Newark, N.J.; New Haven, Conn.; and Providence, R.I.
