Saving Marine Life Is Trainers’ Topic
Authorities from Dana Point Police Services, the Ocean Institute and the California Department of Fish and Game will train about 30 officials today from Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Dana Point on proper law-enforcement procedures to deter poaching and other encroachments in local marine-life refuges.
Russ Chilton, a Police Services deputy, will provide an overview of the enforcement plan being used to protect the area. Lt. Angel Raton of the Department of Fish and Game will discuss enforcement of the California Fish and Game Codes. And marine biologists from the Ocean Institute will provide instruction on species identification, then lead participants on a tour of the Dana Point Marine Life Refuge.
“Dana Point Police Services’ year-old Marine Life Refuge Enforcement Program has been so successful at deterring poaching in the tide pools around the Ocean Institute that other cities are considering using similar techniques,” Deputy Ron Kennedy said.
