Renovation Bids Sought for Plaza

Share

The City Council today will begin the search for a company to handle renovation of historic Old Towne Plaza.

The city estimates the project will cost about $1.17 million. Plans include the central plaza fountain, landscaping and walkways, and the removal of four planters at the plaza’s corners.

The city also intends to replace brick sidewalks in the plaza with scored concrete. Some residents have protested the removal of the bricks, which were installed in the mid-’70s.

Assistant city engineer Roger Hohnbaum said concrete surfaces actually are more true to the 1930s theme of the plaza.

“That’s the era we’re trying to preserve,” he said.

Construction on the plaza is expected to begin in March.

The council will begin accepting bids at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall, 300 E. Chapman Ave.
