Off-Roading

Off-roading enthusiasts--from stock sport-utility-driving occasional dirt-road runners to the most hard-core rock climbers with giant-wheeled Jeeps and jacked-up pickups--will be aiming their wheels toward Pomona this weekend.

The L.A. County Fairplex there is the site of Off-Road Expo 2000, designed to provide enthusiasts with a one-stop shopping center as well as a chance to see hundreds of off-road racing machines and to meet top racing drivers and crews.

The event, modeled after the SCORE off-road shows of the 1980s, features more than 200 product booths that organizers say will offer everything needed to build, maintain and operate off-road cars and trucks.

More than 100 off-road racing vehicles will be on display, including 40 that are slated to compete in the Baja 2000 in November.

Expo hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8, with children under 12 admitted at no charge.

“Color and Chrome” is the theme of the 13th annual benefit car show for Project Angel Food presented by the Great Autos of Yesteryear club. More than 150 collector and special-interest vehicles are expected for this year’s event, with a special focus on dual- and tri-tone cars of the 1950s. The show, Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will take place at the Petersen Automotive Museum, 6060 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. $12 event admission includes entry to the museum.
