1st Quarter

THE SCORING: * Arizona 7, USC 0: Wade, 75-yard pass from Jenkins at 14:33. 80-yard drive, three plays. PAT--Keel (kick).

* Arizona 14, USC, 0: Jenkins, 1-yard run at 6:59. 28-yard drive, 5 plays. Key gain--Marshall, 26-yard reverse pass from Leonard from the USC 28. PAT--Keel (kick).

* Arizona 21, USC 0: Farmer, 80-yard run at 1:08. 80-yard drive, 1 play. PAT--Keel (kick).

TURNING POINT: USC had a chance to score on its third possession, trailing, 14-0, after Nickels’ 5-yard pass from Palmer on third and three from the USC 36 set up a Trojan first down. Colbert’s 32-yard reception on the next play put the Trojans at the Arizona 27, but back-to-back sacks on Palmer followed by a missed 42-yard field goal by Newbury ended the drive. Arizona scored again two possessions later.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Wade’s 75-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins is a career long for both. It is also the longest pass play against USC since UCLA’s J.J. Stokes scored on a 90-yard pass from John Barnes in 1992. Jenkins called off the kicking team on Arizona’s second touchdown on fourth and goal. Instead he ran it in on a bootleg play.

STAT WATCH: Arizona outgained USC, 188-93, in total yardage, including 82-6 rushing. Farmer had 90 yards on six carries. McCullough was the Trojans’ leading rusher with 11 yards on six carries. Palmer completed five of 10 passes for 87 yards.

2nd Quarter

THE SCORING: * Arizona 21, USC 6: Papadakis, 1-yard run at 1:19. 28-yard drive, six plays following Hill’s interception at Arizona 30. Key gain--Stevenson, 19-yard pass from Palmer on first and 10 from the Arizona 28. PAT--Kick blocked.

TURNING POINT: USC missed two opportunities to score. First, after starting at the Arizona 45 on its second possession, USC yielded back-to-back sacks on Palmer for minus-11 yards and was forced to punt at the Arizona 30. On the Trojans’ next possession, Newbury missed a 35-yard field goal. USC scored on the next drive following Hill’s interception.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Arizona Coach Dick Tomey said Arizona flattened out in the second quarter. Papadakis’ touchdown was the first touchdown yielded by the Wildcats since the third quarter of the Arizona-Ohio State game on Sept. 9--nearly an 11-quarter span.

STAT WATCH: McCullough averaged 1 yard a carry. Palmer completed five of nine passes for 75 yards. Arizona added only three yards rushing. USC finished the second quarter with minus-1 yard rushing.

3rd Quarter

THE SCORING: * Arizona 21, USC 9: Wall, 27-yard field goal at 10:21. 56-yard drive, 13 plays. Key plays--Nickels, 11-yard pass from Palmer on first and 15 at the USC 48. Landrigan, 2-yard run on third and one from the Arizona 11.

* Arizona 28, USC 9: Jenkins, 4-yard run at 5:10. 19-yard drive, 3 plays, following Haroon’s forced fumble. Key gain--Farmer, 2-yard run on second and one at the USC 10, followed by a face-mask penalty on USC. PAT--Keel (kick)

TURNING POINT: After the Trojans’ field goal, Deshaun Hill sacked Jenkins for an 11-yard loss on second and four from the USC 44. Arizona did not get a first down and punted. On the Trojans’ next possession, Palmer scrambled for six yards on second and 10 before Idris Haroon forced and recovered a fumble at the USC 19. USC went three and out on its next two series.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Wall, who replaced Newbury, made his first kick as a Trojan.

STAT WATCH: USC rushed for 14 yards. Arizona added only nine. USC outgained Arizona, 61-32. Arizona fumbled twice but recovered each time. USC ran 22 plays to Arizona’s 13.

4th Quarter

Arizona 31

THE SCORING: * Arizona 31, USC 9: Keel, 29-yard field goal at 9:17. 19-yard drive, three plays following Jolivette’s interception at the Arizona 47 and 34-yard return to the USC 19. Key gain--Farmer, 8-yard rush on third and 10 from USC 19.

* Arizona 31, USC 15: Nickels, 7-yard pass from Palmer on first and goal at :29. 70-yard drive, nine plays. Key gain--Butler, 23-yard pass from Palmer on third and 15 from the Arizona 30.

TURNING POINT: USC was able to put together a 70-yard touchdown drive with the help of Nickels’ three catches for 26 yards.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: The Trojans were without Marcell Allmond, who broke the tibia in his left leg.

STAT WATCH: Palmer had a career-high 50 attempts on the day. He completed nine of 18 passes for 114 yards in the fourth quarter.
