The fund-raising 5K walk Saturday for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County will be a bittersweet occasion for Heather Larson, an 8-year-old Ohio native suffering from cancer.

On the plus side, Heather will be joined by about 100 girls from the Orange-based Brownie Troop 1876, of which she is a member. Heather, living temporarily in Santa Ana while she receives treatment at CHOC, joined the troop about six weeks ago to meet children her own age. The Brownies decided to enter the CHOC walk and raise funds for the hospital in honor of Heather.

CHOC walk--An article in Thursday’s paper incorrectly reported the date of a 5K fund-raising walk for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. The event will be held Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

But the CHOC walk will also be a reminder of the $500 donation from her friends and family in Ohio that was lost during a recent airline flight back to Orange County. The cash was in luggage that the airline lost. The loss has devastated Heather, who had hoped to win prizes with each dollar she raised, said her mother, Robin Sanker.

Still, Heather vows not to let the missing donation get her down. “I’m excited” for the walk, she said.

The walk begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration starting at 6:30 a.m. Walkers must have a minimum of $35 in donations to enter. Information: (714) 289-4000.
