Police union director Dennis Zine said Friday he will run for the west San Fernando Valley’s 3rd District seat on the Los Angeles City Council, which is being vacated because incumbent Laura Chick is running for city controller.

Zine, who filed papers Thursday with the city Ethics Commission to begin fund raising, joins a crowded race with six other candidates, including City Council aide Francine Oschin and former council aide Judith Hirshberg.

A 53-year-old resident of West Hills, Zine is an LAPD sergeant and is currently vice president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League.

“I’m running because we need to provide the San Fernando Valley, and particularly the 3rd District, with the services they are paying for,” Zine said. “We need to have representative government for the 3rd District.”

He said his experience as a police officer makes him uniquely qualified to tackle the problem of crime in the Valley.

Zine is also the only candidate in the race with elective experience, having won election three years ago to Los Angeles’ charter reform commission representing the 3rd District.
