Share

Steve Stagnaro threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns and Manuel Gutierrez rushed for 147 yards as Brea Olinda opened up defense of its Orange League title with a 31-7 victory over Anaheim Friday at Brea Olinda High.

Stagnaro and the Wildcats opened up shaky and were forced to punt on their first two possessions, but they got their offense moving on their third possession, going 80 yards in 11 plays. Stagnaro and Gutierrez hooked up for 22 yards on a fourth and six from the Colonist 27-yard line. After a holding penalty, Stagnaro connected with Brandon Nicholson on a 15-yard slant and Brea went ahead, 7-0.

The Wildcats (4-2, 1-0) struck quickly on their next drive, needing only two plays to extend their lead to 14-0. On a halfback option, Justin Rigsby hit Evan Moore for 39 yards. Stagnaro followed that with a 40-yard touchdown pass play to Gutierrez.

The Wildcats were penalized 19 times for 159 yards. They fumbled the ball a couple of times behind their reserve quarterback, losing one in the fourth quarter that cost them the shutout.

Anaheim (1-5, 0-1), which hardly touched the ball in the second half, took over at the Brea 26. Six plays and a fourth-down conversion later, Ryan Paterson found William Safotu from 11 yards out.
