Devices to Monitor Erosion on Bridge

Share

The Santa Clara River Bridge will receive 32 new erosion monitoring devices to help keep track of damage to piers that hold up the bridge.

The “float out” devices are buried at various depths. When erosion occurs they float to the surface, alerting maintenance personnel, Caltrans officials said.

The six-lane bridge that separates Oxnard from Ventura will be replaced with a 12-lane bridge starting in 2002. The devices, along with another one to determine whether the bridge is slanting, will be installed by Friday.

The bridge replacement project will cost about $50 million and should be completed by 2006.
