The historic Kraemer House has been declared a public nuisance by members of the City Council.

The house at 525 N. Angelina Ave. is in serious disrepair, officials said. A chain-link fence surrounds it and the windows are boarded up; vandals break in, spray it with graffiti and set fires in it, they said.

Last week the council decided to move on with an abatement process for the site.

“This is a way to tell the owner to keep up the site,” said Joyce Rosenthal, director of development services for the city.

The owners now must repair, reconstruct or demolish the property in order to comply with the abatement. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the matter Nov. 14.
