Seeking new markets for its dwindling data storage business, Western Digital Corp. said that it created a subsidiary to focus on providing cable television companies with digital recording technology. The new product, a high-tech substitute for videocassette recorders, would allow cable providers to give customers the ability to record up to 30 hours of television programming. The Irvine disk drive maker said it also has reached an agreement for its new unit, Keen Personal Media Inc., to develop and license its digital video recorder software to Scientific-Atlanta Inc. in Norcross, Ga., which makes digital set-top boxes.
