Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County has named Gary Mugridge as its new executive director.

The nonprofit Christian organization helps build and repair homes for low-income families by organizing volunteers.

The Oxnard office has a four-person staff that coordinates 1,000 volunteers throughout the county, Mugridge said. Ventura County’s Habitat office has built 17 homes in the area since 1984, when it became the first office in the state.

The organization plans to build 11 homes in Piru and Santa Paula in 2001, Mugridge said, adding that his goal for next year is to have more home projects in Ventura and Oxnard.

Mugridge, 40, worked for 17 years with nonprofit organizations before coming to the county. His past charitable experiences include working with a Humane Society chapter in Washington state and a domestic-violence treatment program in Utah.

Habitat for Humanity continues to seek more volunteers. Everyone is encouraged to help, Mugridge said, regardless of construction experience. Those with construction backgrounds may guide other volunteers.
