Distributor Prepares for Recall of Helmets

Variflex Inc., a Moorpark-based distributor of skateboards, in-line skates and protective gear, said it has asked retailers to stop selling X-Games Helmets because some of them don’t meet safety standards.

Variflex is working on the details of a recall with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said company spokesman Jack Leone. The helmets were made by a different company, Variflex said.

About 150,000 X-Games Helmets have been sold by retailers over the past year at an average cost of about $20 each, Variflex said. The recall is expected to have an impact on the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter results, Variflex said.
