The federal department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $1.8 million to Ability First, a nonprofit group that helps low-income people with disabilities find housing in Irvine.

Mayor Christina Shea announced the award recently, saying the city is particularly pleased that the funds will be used for people with disabilities.

The grant provides funding to build or rehabilitate apartments and provide five years of rental assistance to occupants. Participants will pay 30% of their income toward rent and HUD will pay the rest. The grant will be designated for people between 18 and 62 who earn a very low income ($10,000 annually for a one-person household) and have some type of physical or developmental disability or chronic mental illness. Information: (949) 724-6354.
