U.N. Booster Club Plans Saturday Event

The local chapter of the United Nations’ booster club will gather Saturday to promote a culture of peace.

The county group promotes interest in the mission of the United Nations, a task that “gets more difficult with the passage of time,” said Thomas P. Higgins, president of the county chapter of the United Nations Assn.

“Most of the members are from the World War II generation,” Higgins said.

“Baby boomers don’t seem to be terribly interested in the U.N.”

People who were alive when the United Nations was founded in 1945 understand its importance, he said.

“Now people kind of take it for granted and are susceptible to these unfounded attacks on the U.N.,” Higgins said.

“Two-thirds of the people support the U.N., but it’s not a big issue in their lives.”

County schools Supt. Charles Weis will discuss how education promotes peace, and the county’s Chinese-American Assn. Folk Dance Troupe will perform.

The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Ventura College Theater, Loma Vista Road near Seton Hall Avenue.
