EARNINGS

* Merck & Co. said profit rose 19% in the third quarter to $1.84 billion, or 78 cents a share, beating expectations of 73 cents. Sales jumped 29% to $10.56 billion, led by strong sales of its Vioxx drug for arthritis and Zocor for high cholesterol.
