City May Buy Property for Open Space

City leaders are set to vote tonight on whether to spend $170,000 to buy a 15.6-acre parcel in the Conejo Ridge area as permanent public open space.

The land at the corner of Conejo School Road and Willow Lane, which is visible from the Ventura Freeway, would be purchased from Dorothy F. Malcom and the Malcom Testamentary Trust, according to a city staff report.

The council in July asked staff members to determine the value of the land and begin negotiating a purchase. The money will come from the city’s open-space acquisition fund, which contains $250,000, the report said.

Conejo Ridge has been identified by the Conejo Open Space and Conservation Agency as a priority area for land to add to the city’s 14,000-acre open-space ring. The parcel includes a portion of the planned Juan Bautista de Anza Historic Trail and is home to several species of wildlife.

Although no development plans are pending, the city’s general plan calls for the property to be developed as housing, the report said.

The City Council meets at 6 p.m. in the Scherr Forum Theatre at the Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd.
