Demonstration Car Overturned at School

A wrecked car parked at Buena High School as part of a police presentation on drunk driving was flipped over onto its roof Tuesday, authorities said. They believe students were responsible.

The beat-up Pontiac Grand Am had been towed to the school on Victoria Avenue early Tuesday and was turned upside-down about 11 a.m., authorities said.

The vehicle was supposed to be used by officers during a presentation for Red Ribbon Week. The event, which started Monday, promotes a drug-free lifestyle to students nationwide through prevention and education.

Witnesses said that after the car was flipped, it leaked about 10 gallons of gasoline onto the lawn, along with battery acid, oil and transmission fluid. Some grass had to be removed to clean up the spill.

Ventura Police Sgt. Quinn Fenwick said authorities were not investigating the incident but that school officials might penalize the responsible students, if they can be identified.

A tow truck removed the car Tuesday afternoon.
