Council Joins Opposition to ‘O’
The City Council has joined a growing list of councils and other public and private organizations across Ventura County opposing Measure O.
At its Tuesday night meeting, the council voted 4 to 0 to oppose the measure, which would give control of the county’s $260 million in tobacco settlement money to three private hospitals.
The Oxnard council joins half a dozen other cities, as well as dozens of groups such as El Concilio del Condado de Ventura and the Ventura County Psychological Assn., in opposing the measure on the Nov. 7 ballot.
More than two dozen people spoke out against Measure O at two Oxnard council meetings. The council heard from only one person in favor of the initiative: a representative of Community Memorial Hospital of Ventura, the measure’s sponsor.
Councilman Dean Maulhardt abstained from the vote, because he believes the issue is outside the city’s jurisdiction.
