Museum Hosts Photo and Folk Art Events

The Carnegie Art Museum’s fall schedule includes workshops on photography and two events to celebrate the Latino observance Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

Photographer Robert Werling, who studied with master photographers Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham, will lead a workshop today and Sunday at the museum.

The all-day workshops, intended for serious students, will look at black-and-white photographs and offer advice on selecting locations. The cost is $115 for museum members and $130 for others.

On Wednesday the museum will host a Day of the Dead event, featuring the museum’s “Laughing With Death” art exhibit. The exhibit will showcase work by Virginia Ashby Valdez, Xavier Montes, Jose Ramirez and Tony de Carlo.

“The evening will highlight visual art demonstrations on Mexican folk art relating to the season, including a message altar, storytelling and the making of papel picado, or cut paper,” said Patricia Vincent, museum spokeswoman.

Docents will be on hand for tours and storytelling. Music and refreshments will also be included.

The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students, $1 for children and free for museum members.

On Nov. 4, the museum will again mark Day of the Dead with a sugar skull-making workshop for adults, taught by folk art expert Virginia Ashby Valdez. The traditional craft involves molding a sugar mixture into the shape of a skull and decorating it for the holiday.

The cost is $25 general and $22 for museum members. There is a $4 fee for supplies. The workshop runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

All three events take place at the museum, 424 South C St.
