Power Versus the People

Share

As a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, I am moved by Connie Rice’s quest to help save our students in the inner city (“A Pain in the Power Structure’s Rear,” by Kerry Madden, Oct. 1). All students in our district should have equal access to a safe, top-quality, attractive learning environment that will foster their success and motivate them to become productive citizens. In many cases, however, officials overlook or ignore many of the real problems and issues that hinder our students’ success.

Ah! The arrogance of the “Power Structure.” In America, it continually ignores large segments of its constituents at great peril. Our political leaders have no understanding of the needs of the working class they represent. They are not willing to listen to individuals who do understand the needs of this group. Connie Rice is only filling a vacuum created by the people in power.
