Sixteen of the top 20 newspapers in the U.S. posted gains in circulation for the six months ended Sept. 30, the Audit Bureau of Circulations said.

There was no change in the ranking of the top papers, with Dow Jones & Co.’s Wall Street Journal and Gannett Co.’s USA Today again vying to be the No. 1 paper in the country and the New York Times Co.’s namesake paper ranked third, according to the audit figures.

The nation’s biggest newspapers either dropped only slightly or had increases while the smaller papers saw mostly decreases in circulation. Big papers have more money for marketing and specialized editorial content to lure readers, the Newspaper Assn. of America said.

Overall daily circulation for the U.S. newspapers in the six months ending Sept. 30 fell 0.41% while Sunday circulation fell 0.71%.

The 785 newspapers reporting daily figures showed an overall drop to 49.5 million from 49.7 million amid competition from other media, according to an analysis of the audit report by the newspaper association.

Circulation at Tribune Co.’s Los Angeles Times, the nation’s fourth-biggest paper, fell 4% to 1,033,399.
