Checklist: Labor Day / Things to do this weekend with your money

Share

Labor Day weekend is a good time to review your job situation.

* Today: Know your benefits. You may be aware of your job’s more high-profile perks--a 401(k) or 403(b), health and life insurance, pension, a tax-saver account for child care and medical expenses. But many companies offer other benefits and discounts, such as low-cost disability, auto or long-term-care insurance; free legal help; credit union membership; short-term therapy; tuition reimbursement and scholarships; discounts on movie tickets, theme park admissions and other entertainment.

* Saturday: Know your worth. Trade publications, classified advertisements and job search sites such as Monster.com and CareerPath.com can help you gauge demand--and prevailing salaries--for your skills.

* Sunday: Update your resume. Your earning power is your most valuable financial asset. Even if you’re happy at your present job, you should occasionally revise your resume to include recent accomplishments and new goals, just in case the right job offer comes along.
