A Maker of Toys

* Re “Through His Toys, Craftsman Fashions Self-Esteem, Values,” Aug. 19.

My commendations for Karin Grennan’s wonderful story on Gene West, the Ventura County toy maker.

I have known Gene and his wife for a number of years, dating back to when I was scoutmaster of a handicapped Boy Scouts troop at Camarillo State Hospital. He would bring his toys to our meetings, and the Scouts had a magnificent time.

This story caught West’s modesty and quiet demeanor. The fact that he refuses to sell any of his toys is a testament to his character. He is more interested in sharing his creations with children of the community rather than having any of his toys sold to any one family, denying the joy to others.

In this day and age of road rage and “numero uno,” Gene West is an exemplar of community values and sharing that seem to be fast disappearing from our horizon.
