Grant Waite, whose lone PGA Tour victory came seven years ago, moved past overnight leader Jesper Parnevik on Saturday to take a one-stroke edge into today’s final round of the Air Canada Championship.

After starting the third round a shot behind Parnevik, Waite carded a three-under-par 68 to get to 13 under overall at the $3-million event in Surrey, Canada.

Parnevik (70), J.L. Lewis (68) and Tommy Armour III (68) are at 12 under.

“I had a lot of good shots in the middle of the round and played very well but couldn’t get any putts to fall. I think I played well enough to shoot a good score,” said Waite, a New Zealander who won the 1993 Kemper Open.

Mike Weir, trying to become the tournament’s first repeat champion, bogeyed two of his last four holes for a 69. He’s tied for 19th at eight under.

“I’m going to be quite a few back, but the way I’m rolling I think I’m due a lot of putts,” said Weir, a Canadian. “I need to get off to a really good start. I’ve always played the first few holes pretty well here. I just didn’t get any breaks today.”

Mark Calcavecchia, who won the event three years ago when it was known as the Greater Vancouver Open, shot a 65 to get to 10 under. Sergio Garcia was another stroke back after a 69.

Laurel Kean, who gave up competitive golf a year ago, shot her second consecutive six-under 66 to take a three-shot lead after the second round of the State Farm Rail Classic at Springfield, Ill.

First-round co-leader Lorie Kane, who shot a 69, and Dina Ammaccapane, who matched Kean’s low round of 66, were tied for second.

Kean made four birdies and used a six-foot eagle putt on the 505-yard par-five 15th hole to give her six consecutive nines of 33.

Jim Thorpe and Dave Stockton were next at eight under, with Chuck Moran another stroke back.
