Bush’s Proposal for Presidential Debates

* Re “Gore Rejects Bush Offer on Three Debates,” Sept. 4: It is time for George W. Bush to stop being a wuss and accept the debates arranged by the bipartisan commission. It is very difficult to assume the mantle of leadership when you look like you’re trying to ditch your final exam.

The public has often complained about the lack of substance in political campaigns; presidential debates are conducted to address that concern. The debates proposed by the bipartisan commission, similar to those in every election for the last quarter century, ensure fairness and depth.

Bush should not try to get cute about this. A series of stand-up debates should be considered a standard hurdle for aspirants to the job of leader of the free world. What is Bush afraid of?

Let me identify myself as an independent voter. In fact I voted for Ralph Nader in the primary. However, after reading the Aug. 25 article about Bush’s so-called lack of campaign fervor, I wondered if I was the only one who interpreted his “love for being out on the land,” enjoyment of being in his own house with his dog and routine daily jog as positive attributes for a president.

Could it be that we have a candidate who has a strong sense of self and knows what it takes to keep himself centered? Could we be looking at a candidate who doesn’t want to be a superman but wants to lead by including others in the efforts and process of governing? Actually, that sounds like a refreshing change to me.
