Hayden Announces His Run for City Council
State Sen. Tom Hayden officially declared his candidacy Thursday for Mike Feuer’s City Council seat, saying he wants to make Los Angeles a “good place to live instead of a good place to leave.”
“I hope to continue the battles for preserving and enhancing the community quality of life, the school system and the environment, which have been my passions for many years in Sacramento,” Hayden told reporters at morning news conference at Laurel Canyon Park off Mulholland Drive.
Hayden joins an already crowded field of candidates for the job, including Laura Lake, Jack Weiss, Stephen Saltzman, Jill Barad, Victor Norton Viereck, Joseph Patrick Connolly, Nathan Bernstein, Robyn Ritter Simon and Ken Gerston.
Several of the candidates on Thursday accused Hayden of being a carpetbagger because he currently lives in Brentwood but intends to move into Council District 5 by the end of the year.
Hayden scoffed at the criticism. He said he has represented the district--which extends from Westwood to Van Nuys--while serving in the state Senate and only has to “move a few blocks” to be in the council district.
Feuer is running for city attorney.
