City Manager Allan L. Roeder announced this week that the city has completed its part of the renovation of Bark Park, in the southwest corner of TeWinkle Park. Parking has been added and walkways for handicapped access have been completed.
As soon as the Bark Park Committee has planted grass, the city will be ready to reopen the park’s gates to four-legged park users.
The park, which opened in 1994, is a 2-acre fenced facility that allows canines to run around without leashes.
During the renovations, dogs and their owners have been using a temporary park, which the city will keep open for up to 90 days longer to give the committee time to plant the grass.
During a heated public review process on the park last year, residents and council members debated the type of ground cover for the park. Dog owners adamantly wanted grass. But Roeder said the council didn’t want to spend money trying to grow grass, which would probably not survive with so many dogs trampling it.
In October, the council approved a plan to allow Bark Park volunteers to try to grow grass at the park.
