Downey Runs Past Huntington Beach, 35-14

The backfield combination of Justin Phinisee and Joey Shasha proved too much for Huntington Beach as Downey Vikings ran over the Oilers, 35-14, Friday night at Downey High School.

Phinisee’s open-field running and Shasha punishing inside game helped the Vikings gain 332 yards rushing.

Shasha ran for 165 yards in 19 carries and Phinisee rushed for 81 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Downey scored on the game’s first possession.

Phinisee, the Vikings mobile quarterback, faked the ball to his running backs, reversed his field and turned the corner for an 11-yard score. The drive went for 74 yards in 16 plays and took nearly eight minutes in the first quarter.

Phinisee would later score on 29-yard option run to give the Vikings a two-touchdown cushion.

If not for a Viking fumble deep in Oiler territory midway through the second quarter, the Oilers could have been down by more.

The Oilers trailed 35-0 late in the fourth quarter when reserve quarterback Phil Amico, in for a hobbled Ryder, led the team on a 56-yard scoring scoring drive capped by a 17-yard touchdown run by Russell Oschman, who had 92 yards in 14 carries.

Huntington Beach scored again when Skylar Flores recovered a Viking fumble and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown.
