Dynamic Duo

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jeanne and John Pisano have the kind of mutual admiration anybody would want.

They are not only happily married, they are happily making music together. Jeanne is a pure-voiced soprano who instills her versions of standards and originals with a mixture of delicacy, verve and emotion; John is a nimble-fingered guitarist who crafts chords and solos replete with ear-tingling notes.

The Pisanos, who live on a Studio City hilltop, perform as a vocal-guitar duo. They will perform Wednesday and Sept. 28 at the Baked Potato in North Hollywood, where they will celebrate the release of their new CD, “Ensemble.”

“The thing that I enjoy most about working just with Jeanne is that I have total freedom within the forms of the songs we’re doing,” said John, known for his work with Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass and jazz guitar great Joe Pass. “I can create anything I want.”

“We really listen and communicate so well together,” said Jeanne, a professional vocalist for 25 years.

When the Pisanos were holding forth in the late 1990s at the now-defunct Papashon in Encino, they discovered the joys of adding a wind or brass player, along with a bassist, to their shows.

“I love that texture thing, the blend that I get when I sing with someone else,” Jeanne said. “When you hit notes that blend, it makes it richer.”

In Brief: The talented, resourceful saxophonist Steve Tavaglione should not be one of our town’s better-kept secrets, but darn it, he is.

Maybe a change is in store.

Tavaglione just released his debut album, a pleasing affair called “Silent Singing.”

He plays Wednesday at 9:30 p.m with keyboardist David Garfield’s group at Cafe Cordiale, 14015 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks.
