Free Trash Drop-Off Offered Sunday

Thousand Oaks residents can drop off garbage for free Sunday at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. city residents can bring their garbage to the center at 2801 Madera Road.

Normally, there is a fee ranging from $15.05 for a carload of garbage to $26.60 for a truckload, said Renee Perez, an assistant at the center. It costs $9 to drop off appliances on other days, she added.

Last year, 609 loads of garbage were brought, city officials said.

The free drop-off day is part of a contract Thousand Oaks has with the center. The contract, agreed upon last year, stipulates that the center provide a free trash drop-off day each year for Thousand Oaks residents in return for the city disposing its waste at the landfill, said Don Nelson, Thousand Oaks’ public works director.

The city offers its own trash drop-off day each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, when residents can bring garbage to the Conejo Creek Park parking lot, Nelson said.

No liquids, tires with rims or hazardous waste products may be dumped at the center, Perez said.
