A grant from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development is expected to help cut down the time it takes city crews to clean up oil-contaminated areas.

Totaling about $323,000, the technology grant will be used for cleanup in the northwest corner of Ellis and Goldenwest streets in Huntington Central Park, where former oil operations have contaminated the ground.

City officials said the grant will allow them to bring soil cleanup time from one to two years down to 60 to 75 days. A demonstration of the technique is set for 2 p.m. Friday on the site.
