South Africa Stuns Brazil, 3-1

Capitalizing on its counterattack, South Africa surprised Olympic favorite Brazil, 3-1, in men’s soccer round-robin play Sunday at Brisbane.

Breaking a 1-1 halftime tie, South African substitutes Siyabonga Nomvette and Steve Lekoelea scored in the 73rd and 89th minutes for the victory.

Brazil plays Japan on Wednesday in the final round-robin game. In Pool D, Brazil and South Africa have three points each, and Japan had six.

Japan 2, Slovakia 1--Japan took a 2-0 lead and held on to advance to the single-elimination round with the victory at Canberra.

Chile 3, Spain 1--Chile again banked on its newly found strike force of veteran Ivan Zamorano and rookie Reinaldo Navia to win at Melbourne. Rafael Olarra scored for Chile in the 23rd minute and Navia added his goals in the 54th and 89th, both on assists by Zamorano. LaCruz scored for Spain in the 53rd. Chile, with six points in Pool B, will next play South Korea; and Spain will meet Morocco. South Korea and Spain have three points each.

South Korea 1, Morocco 0--Lee Chun-Soo’s rebound of a penalty kick in the 53th minute led South Korea to the victory at Adelaide.
