FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LANDING--Largemouth bass are biting on top-water lures early and plastic worms and waterdogs during the day. No big ones. Some striped bass, bluegill and catfish.

PYRAMID LAKE--Fishing is fair for largemouth bass on crankbaits off points, and slow to fair for striped bass on anchovies in the channel. Some catfish.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--An eight-pound, three-ounce bass by Ed Legaspri, Oxnard, on a crawdad tops the list. Brothers Long and Jackson from Church of Christ in Los Angeles caught three catfish totaling 35 on mackerel. Trout are active at 50 feet at the dam, biting on night crawlers and Power Bait.

LAKE PIRU--Bass have gotten a little more active, but fishing is fair at best for those using mostly plastic worms and crankbaits. Some trout and panfish.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout are holding at about 40 feet and trollers using firetiger-pattern Needlefish are doing well at the west end. Some limits. Largemouth bass are active on the surface early, and holding at 15-20 feet during the day. Catfish are active at the narrows and Santa Cruz Bay.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--Catfish remain the only thing worth fishing for and a few are nearing 10 pounds.

IRVINE LAKE--A 42-pound catfish was caught by Dave Pierson, Garden Grove, on mackerel at the flats. This is the season for big catfish. Bass (white crankbaits) and crappie (white and yellow mini-jigs) are active too.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass fishing remains steady on plastic worms and crankbaits, with fish averaging two to six pounds. Lots of catfish too.

San Bernardino County

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--One of the best lures for trout, of all things, is a green crankbait. Top catch is five to 15 pounds and fishing is fair to good for trout only.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--A 10-pound, one-ounce catfish highlights a decent bite for those using mackerel. Some bluegill and crappie.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass is the best bet, with plugs and baits (liver, anchovies) getting fish to about eight pounds. Catfish and largemouth bass are biting too.

LAKE PERRIS--An evening catfish bite is best and it will remain this way till the weather cools and the bass start stirring. Bass fishermen using waterdogs early are getting some.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass are boiling early and late, but the bite is sporadic. Catfish are biting on the usual stuff and largemouth bass are occasionally being caught off points.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--A four-pound, 14-ounce bass was caught on a Trout Teaser by a trout fisherman, and trout fishing is pretty good. A kids’ derby is scheduled Saturday.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Bass fishing is fair at the bass holes, and a nine-pound, eight-ounce caught on a Super Grub at Lower Otay tops the list. Otay and San Vicente are fair for crappie.

Eastern Sierra

The lakes above Bishop have been productive when the wind wasn’t blowing, and when it was the focus on the creek. A five-pound, eight-ounce rainbow was caught in the creek on a gold Mepps. The lakes above Mammoth Lakes are yielding some big fish. A nine-pound, four-ounce was caught at Twin, an eight-pound, 14-ounce at Mary and an 8-9 at George. Crowley Lake remains good to very good for fly fishermen using perch fry imitations and chironomids, and Convict Lake is yielding its usual daily lunker. Hot Creek has a great dry fly bite in progress. At the June Lake Loop, fishing remains fair to good on all the lakes, and this is the time the browns start running into Rush Creek to spawn. A seven-pound, nine-ounce rainbow was caught in the creek on an unknown bait. In Bridgeport, the East Walker River (flowing at 212 cfs) remains a good place for fly fishermen using mostly midge-patterns and blue-winged olives. Bridgeport Reservoir is low and fishing is as tough as it is to launch a boat in. The West Walker is offering lots of action for small fish and the big news is that Kirman Lake brook trout are getting active and biting on scud pattern flies.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--47 anglers (3 boats): 80 albacore, 45 red rockcod, 60 rockcod, 55 rockfish.

AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)--14 anglers (1 boat): 25 red rockcod, 113 bolina, 6 lingcod, 2 red snapper, 2 kelp greenling.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--8 anglers (1 boat): 42 calico bass, 1 halibut, 10 mackerel, 1 ocean whitefish, 30 rockfish, 10 sand bass, 3 sheephead, 45 blacksmith.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--80 anglers (5 boats): 76 yellowtail, 1 white seabass, 145 whitefish, 21 sheephead, 15 sculpin, 46 sand bass, 44 rockfish, 1 red snapper, 4 halibut, 171 calico bass, 14 barracuda.

PORT HUENEME--40 anglers (2 boats): 1 white seabass, 10 yellowtail, 170 calico bass, 6 sheephead, 22 rockfish, 15 sand bass, 3 sculpin, 38 whitefish.

MARINA DEL REY--36 anglers (3 boats): 142 sculpin, 25 sand bass, 2 halibut.

REDONDO BEACH--53 anglers (3 boats): 16 yellowtail, 5 barracuda, 15 bonito, 46 calico bass, 25 sole, 100 red snapper, 10 salmon grouper, 7 bosco, 6 sheephead, 2 sculpin, 1 sand bass.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--53 anglers (3 boats): 2 yellowtail, 100 bonito, 56 whitefish, 27 rockfish, 20 sheephead, 29 calico bass, 25 sand bass, 2 barracuda, 2 salmon grouper. (22nd St. Landing)--55 anglers (3 boats): 34 yellowtail, 72 calico bass, 12 barracuda, 4 sculpin, 89 whitefish, 41 rockfish, 8 red snapper.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--77 anglers (4 boats): 38 yellowtail, 145 bonito, 2 barracuda, 62 calico bass, 142 rockfish, 1 halibut, 6 rockcod, 58 whitefish, 32 sheephead, 4 sculpin, 2 cabezon, 15 blue perch. OCEANSIDE (Helgren’s)--143 anglers (7 boats): 170 yellowfin tuna, 120 yellowtail, 31 bonito, 142 sand bass, 5 sculpin, 1 soupfin shark, 21 sand shark, 11 dorado.
