This Motel’s Fire-Safe

Firefighters moved out of an Orange County Fire Authority building in San Juan Capistrano this week so the facility can be made more earthquake-proof. The crew’s home away from home is the Mission Inn, and fire engines stand ready in the parking lot. This marks the 17th Fire Authority building to be retrofitted in recent years, and three more will be done in coming months, officials said. The work costs $80,000 to $100,000 per building, authority spokesman Capt. Paul Hunter said. Fire call response times have not been affected by the moves, he said.
