After taking new material they’d been working on with producer Steve Lillywhite on the road this summer, the Dave Matthews Band has decided to take the songs in new directions and will start over on its next album, this time with Glen Ballard, who produced Alanis Morissette’s albums and No Doubt’s latest. Sessions will start in early October in Los Angeles, with plans to release a single around Christmas and the album in January. . . .

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have recently recorded a new version of “Surrender,” a part of the band’s late-’70s concert repertoire that was never released, for inclusion on “Through the Years,” a two-CD anthology of the band’s material. Also included will be the 1988 song “Waiting for the Night,” featuring background vocals by the Bangles and previously available only on the 1995 six-CD box set, “Playback.” “Almost Famous” director Cameron Crowe wrote the liner notes for the new collection. . . .

A new David Byrne song and tracks previously unreleased in the U.S. by Peter Gabriel, R.E.M. and Travis are featured on “Mantra Mix,” due Oct. 24 from the Narada World label benefiting a foundation started by the Dalai Lama to assist Tibetan refugees. Among others donating songs are Sinead O’Connor, Natalie Merchant, Massive Attack, Fatboy Slim, Moby and Ben Harper. Also included is a bonus disc with more music tracks and interactive CD-ROM elements. . . .

Rapper Kurupt is working on a new album, due in February. Everlast, Cypress Hill’s B-Real and Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst are among the guest performers.
