Ventura County Community Foundation announced the recipients of its annual “Women’s Legacy Fund.” Ten nonprofit programs around the county received more than $35,000 in grant money during an awards ceremony at Cal State Channel Islands.

The fund was established in 1995 to create a permanent source of support for the special needs of women and girls in Ventura County. The 2000 grants program focused on family violence, child abuse, anger, language skills, parenting skills and self-esteem. This year’s awards budget was funded in part by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.

The recipients:

* Boys & Girls Club programs in Ventura, Simi Valley, Santa Clara Valley and Oxnard-Port Hueneme each received $4,000 to support their SMART Girls program, which aims to develop “healthy attitudes and lifestyles.”
